1. Build Excitement From the Beginning

Students should smile and feel those warm feelings from the moment they are about to step foot into your classroom!  One easy way is through door decorations. Every year I do something different and usually have students add to the door in some way.  This year our theme was the Grinch, so I went simple, but festive.

2. Find Your Elf Name!!!

Ok, so with elf names, you're not going to be teaching any standards.  This is strictly a fun one, but you have to have fun, right?  Elf names are a great Christmas activity to build engagement with your class. Everyone wants to know what their name would be if they lived at the North Pole!!!

Students look at the elf list and write their names on their name card.  I have them decorate the cards then I laminate and tape to the desks for the month.  The students really get a kick out of this!

I try my best to use their elf name throughout December.  These Christmas name plates are super adorable and a great FREE addition to your lessons.

. 3. Descriptive Elf Writing

While we stay on the topic of elves, we always have fun with this descriptive writing Christmas activity.  Students choose from six different face templates (3 boys/3 girls).  When they have chosen their face, they roll a die to distinguish what pants, hat, shirt and shoes they will draw on their elf!  This is great for those artsy students!  Some years I even use the blank template and paste the student's face on the picture for them to draw as an elf!!!

When they have completed their drawing, I have the students write in as much detail as possible about their elf.  What EXACTLY does their elf look like from top to bottom?  I then put them on my board, the student reads their writing, and we try to guess which elf belongs to them!  SO MUCH FUN and it really challenges the students to be SPECIFIC!
One of the best ways to incorporate Christmas into your classroom in through read alouds.  There are SO MANY Christmas books that are my favorites that it's sometimes hard to choose.  I ADORE this idea that Shonda A. came up with for her classroom!!!

She WRAPS her read alouds like a gift from now until Christmas break!!! What a great way to build excitement and anticipation! Each day one child will get to unwrap a book and can choose to read it to the class or have the teacher read it!  GENIUS!

5. Fun or Meaningful Writing Prompts

As adults, we know that Christmas is about more than presents.  However, children need to be taught that and think about that.  One of m favorite writing prompts to do is "The Present of Presence." What does that mean to your little ones exactly?  Who are they grateful for?  Who has helped them when they needed it most?  Why is that considered a gift?  My students start to understand the importance of having someone special with them, especially during the holiday season!

My absolute FAVORITE writing prompt is one that I call, "Dear Santa, I Can Explain..." Students have to critique their behavior the past year.  There has to be ONE THING that Santa saw they did that they shouldn't have!!!!

Did they push their brother or sister? Lie to their parents? Sneak some dessert before dinner?  It's time to come clean....well sorta.  Students think about that "one time" they did something wrong and try to explain it away!!!  Oh, I can hear Santa's Ho Ho Ho's as he reads these!!!!

There's even a cute craft included to pair with the prompt for a super adorable bulletin board!!!
